Short answer: yes — and it's not close. A Chicago winter is the exact situation energy-efficient windows were built for. Here's what the labels actually mean, in plain English.
U-factor is the number that matters. U-factor measures how fast heat escapes through a window. Lower is better. Old single-pane windows run around 1.0. Double-pane windows from the 1990s often sit near 0.50. For northern Illinois, you want a U-factor of 0.27 or lower. That's roughly half the heat loss of those 1990s windows — through every window in your house, all winter long.
Low-E glass: an invisible coating that keeps your heat inside. Low-E (low-emissivity) is a microscopically thin metallic coating on the glass. In winter it reflects your furnace's heat back into the room instead of letting it radiate outside — blocking a large share of the heat loss through the glass — while still letting sunlight in. You can't see it. Your heating bill can.
Argon gas: better insulation between the panes. Quality double-pane windows are filled with argon, an inert gas that insulates better than plain air and can improve a window's performance by 20–30%. It's what helps a good double-pane window hit that 0.27 range. (You may hear about krypton fills — slightly better, much more expensive, rarely worth it for our climate.)
What this feels like in your house. The difference isn't just the bill. Rooms near windows stop feeling cold. The "don't sit by the window in January" spot disappears. Condensation and ice on the inside of the glass — common on old windows during a cold snap — stops. Your furnace runs less because it isn't fighting a losing battle at every window opening.
There's a federal tax credit, too. Qualifying ENERGY STAR windows are currently eligible for a federal tax credit of 30% of the window cost, up to $600 per year, through the end of 2032. Ask your installer for the certification paperwork and check the details with your tax preparer — but it meaningfully cuts the real cost of doing this right.
The bottom line. If your windows are 20+ years old, energy-efficient replacements are one of the few home upgrades where you feel the difference immediately and keep collecting the savings every winter after.
